RedCedar Eastern-  JUNIPERUS VIRGINIANA

A medium-sized, densely branched, slow-growing coniferous evergreen, pyramidal in shape when young with the crown becoming more rounded with age. Foliage is dark green in summer, turning a reddish-brown in the winter and consists of two types – sharp, spreading needle-like juvenile leaves and tightly adpressed scale-like adult leaves arranged in opposite decussate pairs. Cones are berry-like, dark purple-blue with a white wax covering giving an overall sky-blue color. Easily grown in average, dry to moist, well-drained soil in full sun. This tree is extremely tolerant of drought due to its extensive, fibrous root system and reduced leaf area. Commonly used for windbreaks, privacy screens and wildlife gardens.
